Hardware

CyberTracker software is installed onto a Personal Computer and then uploaded to a Handheld Computer (PDA, or Personal Digital Assistant) or a Smartphone.  Using a GPS, either as part of the PDA or attached, you can geo-reference and map your data.

Compatible Personal Computer Operating Systems

CyberTracker requires Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista. Windows 95/98/Me are not supported.

Compatible Handheld Devices

CyberTracker supports most PalmOS, PocketPC and Windows Mobile Devices. If you bought a device in the last 5 years that runs PalmOS or Windows (Mobile/CE), then it will probably work. However, CyberTracker requires touch screen support, so Smart phones without touch screens are not supported. Color on Palm is only supported on OS 5 and above. You can collect data with both PocketPCs and Palms at the same time.

Compatible GPS Devices

CyberTracker supports any GPS that can output NMEA sentences. NMEA is a serial text protocol that GPS devices use to communicate with other computers. TSIP (Trimble) is also supported. In general, most serial and Bluetooth GPS devices work.

Compatible Camera Devices

For the camera feature you need a Windows Mobile 5 device.

For Field Data Collection, we recommend:

  • SD cards to make back-up of data in the field

  • Removable batteries to ensure that you do not run out of battery power

Waterproof your hardware units

To recharge batteries in the field you need a 12-volt power charger system. Make up your own recharge kit with the following units:

1.   Sealed Rechargeable Lead Acid Battery (12V 2AH)
2.   Battery Charger for 12V Sealed Lead Acid Battery
3.   Car Cigarette charger
4.   External Cigarette Charger connected to the rechargeable battery.
